Upon his return to Mumbai, he was appointed by the state government as honorary assistant professor of surgery at Grant Medical College & JJ Group of Hospitals and was tasked to train hundreds of surgical postgraduates. In 1998, he went to Brazil and trained in ileal transposition surgeries for thin diabetics and in 1999, he became interested in bariatric surgery and completed relevant training to enhance his skills in this field. Later on, he became instrumental in the setting up of bariatric surgery departments of several hospitals in India including Bombay Hospital, the largest private hospital in the area. </p> <p>Being the first to perform the first gastric band and banded gastric bypass in India, Dr. Goel is recognized as one of the pioneers of laparoscopy surgery in India.
