Angioplasty is a nonsurgical procedure performed by licensed cardiologists to open blocked heart arteries. Patients are given local anaesthesia before the process of cardiac catheterization starts. This is where a sheath is inserted into the artery typically from the arm or the groin. A catheter with a small balloon is guided up to the blood vessel to the arteries that surround the heart. The balloon is then inflated to press fatty deposits against the artery wall and make way for the blood to ensure that it flows smoothly. Stent is typically used to ensure that the arteries remain unclogged even after the procedure.

Most diseases including cancer, diabetes, and coronary heat disease, can easily be treated when detected in the early stages. With proper medication and medical advice, the disease will be prevented from developing into advanced stages.

The health screening programs in Singapore are designed for early detection of common diseases. Some are performed by government health institutions, while others by private hospitals and medical clinics.

The government periodically invites citizens and permanent residents to undergo a screening program. Most of the programs are for men and women with ages 40 and above. However, there are programs for women over the age of 25. Men are screen for chronic diseases and colorectal cancer. The program for women includes screening for breast and cervical cancer. Private clinics and medical institutions provide a variety of health screening options. These include:

Basic screening – Includes medical consultation, urine & stool analysis, chest x-ray, ECG, pap smear, and body index analysis. This also includes blood tests like total cholesterol, creatinine, haemoglobin, etc.

Advanced screening – This will include basic health screening procedures plus a host of advanced tests like, tonometry, audiometry, spirometry, and ultrasound.

Most private clinics offer customized screening procedures wherein patients can select which tests they would like to undergo.

After the health screening process, the institution will provide a medical report that will be reviewed by a doctor. Should any abnormalities appear in the report, the doctor may recommend further analysis and or treatment for any health conditions identified in the report. The doctor may also recommend other preventive measures like exercise and general lifestyle changes.
