Located between the canine teeth and the molars in all mouth quadrants, the premolars are essential for chewing. Having just a single root, root canal treatment for premolars is shorter in duration and easier than treatment for the molars. Like in any other kind of root canal treatment, the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and involves the opening of the tooth crown to get to the infected pulp. After the pulp has been removed, the dentist will clean out and widen the canal for filling and sealing.

A post and core may be added to a tooth that has undergone root canal before a dental crown is placed. It could be made of a composite or an amalgam. Both work to provide a good support for the crown and prevent it from dislodging, especially since a root canal treatment can possibly alter the tooth’s structure. A post and core are needed if the person has lost at least 50% of the original dental crown. In a situation where only a small portion was removed or lost, a core would be sufficient.

Retainers

Retainers are custom-made orthodontic devices used specifically to keep the teeth in place after the removal of braces. Usually made of wire structures and plastic or rubber, orthodontic retainers keep your teeth settled into their new corrected position and prevent relapse. They are usually worn for as much time as the braces were in place. Retainers come in two types: fixed or bonded (glued in place through a procedure) or removable (can be taken off during eating or brushing).
