Optimax Eye Specialist Centre’s story begun in 1995 when the first branch in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail was established. It was built with the main goal of redefining standards in innovative eye care by bringing advanced technologies and methods to Malaysia. After more than 20 years, it grew into a chain of premium eye clinics and is now recognised as one of the most reputable eye care providers in Southeast Asia.
Optimax has achieved several milestones since its establishment. Some of the most notable are pioneering laser vision correction in Malaysia and being instrumental in making the technology widely available in the region. The clinic is also recognised for investing heavily in equipment and training both in Malaysia and abroad that drastically improved patient outcomes. Its long standing history and stellar reputation for surgical excellence have attracted not just local patients but also medical travellers from Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Australia, and Thailand, among others.
Optimax Eye Specialist Centre Johor branch is helmed by Dr. Chuah Kay Leong, an ophthalmic surgeon specialising in cataract and refractive surgeries with subspecialty training in corneal and external eye diseases. He is trained in the United Kingdom, has over 18 years of experience, and is the first surgeon to perform ReLex SMILE in Malaysia.
Dr. Chuah Kay Leong graduated from Queen’s University of Belfast Medical School (UK) where he completed his MBBS degree. In 1998, he completed his subspecialty training in external eye disease, cornea, and refractive surgery at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Toronto in Canada. In 1999, he returned to Malaysia and started the corneal transplantation program at the Malaysian National University where he also taught fellow eye surgeons, paramedics, and medical students. In 2000, he joined Optimax Malaysia where he now treats [cataracts](http://www.docdoc.com/info/condition/cataract), glaucoma, and keratoconus and performs intraocular lens implantation and laser refractive surgical procedures. Dr. Chuah is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist (London).
