Dr. Daniel Tan is a consultant radiation oncologist and the medical director of Asian American Radiation Oncology (AARO), a division of Asian American Medical Group (AAMG) that was established in 2015. AARO assists the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC) with the management and clinical supervision of radiation oncology units based in Asia, bringing the latest oncological treatments and technologies to developing countries in the region.
In addition to his work with UPMC and regional oncology units, Dr. Tan also heads AARO's clinical unit, where he offers local and regional patients his clinical expertise and services in sub-speciality radiation oncology and advanced radiation techniques.
Prior to joining AARO, Dr. Tan served at the radiation oncology division of the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), starting out as a trainee and later becoming a consultant radiation oncologist specialising in the management of central nervous system, prostate, and breast cancers. He was co-chairperson of NCCS’ neuro-oncology cancer service line development work group and a clinical lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of the National University of Singapore (NUS).
Dr. Tan began his career in clinical and radiation oncology after completing his MBBS at NUS in 2002, and later obtained his FRCR in Clinical Oncology in 2011 at the Royal College of Radiologists (United Kingdom).
In 2012, Singapore’s Ministry of Health awarded Dr. Tan a Health Manpower Development (HMDP) Award for training in brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and body irradiation (SRS/SBRT) following his earlier HMDP fellowship for advanced clinical oncology training in 2008. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS), Chapter of Radiation Oncology in 2012.
Dr. Tan has also undergone various training programmes at premier international centres, including:
- Proton Therapy, Roberts Proton Therapy Centre, University of Pennsylvania, USA
- Spine Radiosurgery, Princess Margaret Hospital and Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre, Toronto, Canada
- Advanced Radiation Technologies, Tokyo Metropolitan Komagome Hospital, Japan
Dr. Tan’s career highlights include:
- Establishment of the Novalis Spine Radiosurgery service at the National Cancer Centre (NCC), the first of such service in Singapore and the region
- A key role in the development of Novalis Brain Stereotactic Radiosurgery Programme at NCC
- Invitation to IAEA in Vienna as an expert consultant for the second phase of an SBRT course
- Served as the organising chairman of RadiologyAsia 2015
Dr. Tan is a member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), the Society of Neuro-Oncology (SNO), and the International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society (ISRS).
Asian American Radiation Oncology (AARO) is Singapore’s first independent oncology treatment clinic. Established in 2015, it provides specialised and advanced radiation treatment to cancer patients from both Singapore and abroad. It also offers management and advisory services to radiation oncology units in Asia. At the helm of AARO is Dr. Daniel Tan Yat Harn, a radiation oncologist with more than twelve years of experience. He served at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) for eight years, where he specialised in stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiation therapy. He also established the Novalis Spine Radiosurgery service in NCCS, the first service of its kind in the region. He sub-specialises in the management of central nervous system, prostate, and breast cancers. AARO’s partnerships with Mount Elizabeth Orchard, Gleneagles Hospital, and Mount Elizabeth Novena provide it with easy access to management tools as well as high-performance equipment to deliver fast, effective, and precise treatment.
