Dr. Esther Chuwa graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) where she obtained her MBBS degree. Following the completion of her Masters of Medicine in Surgery, she was awarded the Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) scholarship that paved the way for her to pursue her oncoplastic breast fellowship at the renowned Nottingham Breast Institute in the United Kingdom. This was followed by her visiting stints and observerships at breast and reconstruction units of Western General Hospital (Edinburgh, United Kingdom), Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre (New York, USA) and Lyon Berard Cancer Centre (Lyon, France).
One of her career highlights, which also reflects her deep commitment to the health and well-being of her patients, is she conceptualised and set up Alpine Blossoms at KK Breast Department, a holistic breast cancer support programme that she chaired from 2008 to 2012. She is also a member of the Women’s Health Advisory Committee that addresses women’s key health issues in Singapore.
Dr. Chuwa is a published author and has written for various local, regional, and international journals. She is also an ad-hoc reviewer for Journal of Gynaecology and Minimally Invasive Therapy and reviewer for various international journals including Clinical Breast Cancer and International Surgery.
Her areas of expertise include oncoplastic breast surgery, minimally invasive breast biopsy techniques, and localisation and excision of non-palpable breast tumours. She handles both common and complex breast conditions including breast pain, breast cancer, BRCA mutations, and breast lumps. She also conducts comprehensive breast screenings.
Dr. Chuwa, who was given the EXSA Service Excellence Award (Silver Category) in 2008, is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh, Scotland) and Academy of Medicine, Singapore. She is also a member of the European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists, the American College of Breast Surgeons and the International Society of Surgery/Breast Surgery International.
Esther Chuwa BreastCare Practice is a specialist breast clinic at Gleneagles Medical Centre Singapore. In collaboration with Singapore Breast Cancer Foundation and experienced physiotherapists, it offers comprehensive breast care including assessment and diagnostics, pre-surgical advice and counseling, medical and surgical treatments, and post-surgical rehabilitation. The clinic is helmed by Dr. Esther Chuwa, a consultant breast surgeon with over 17 years of experience. With unparalleled passion for breast surgery, she chose to focus her practice on the management and research of breast diseases particularly breast cancer for more than 10 years. She subspecialises in oncoplastic breast surgery for which she received formal training as an oncoplastic fellow at Nottingham breast institute in 2009. Her other sub specialties are minimally invasive breast biopsy techniques and localisation and excision of non-palpable breast tumours.
