Dr. Ravintharan received the Merit Scholarship Award from the Public Service Commission of Singapore for his undergraduate studies. He graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery. In 1987 he obtained his Master’s Degree (NUS) in Surgery & FRCS (Edin). In 1993, he became a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine and the International College of Surgeons based in Chicago, USA.
He received extensive training under the world-renowned Professor Sir Alfred Cuschieri in 1990 in Scotland. He then returned to Singapore and worked in the Public Hospitals, training and performing complex laparoscopic procedures. He was appointed as a visiting consultant to several hospitals to help train surgeons in Laparoscopic surgery.
Among the first to conduct laparoscopic adrenalectomy, fundoplication, oesophagectomy and other operations, he continued to train surgeons around the region. Today, such procedures are often performed as part of regular surgery and cancer management.
Dr. Ravintharan is presently the Senior Consultant Surgeon at Ravi Surgery at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre in Singapore and accredited with other private hospitals in the country.
Ravi Surgery is one of the premier surgical clinics in Singapore and in Southeast Asia. It provides optimised surgical care with safety, comfort, and desired outcome for the patient. For this reason, the clinic is focused on laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery, including elective, emergency, and complex laparoscopic operations. These types of surgeries unlike conventional open operations, require significantly smaller incisions, thereby reducing the operative risks, pain, and hospital stay with faster recovery time The clinic specialises in laparoscopic surgery of the abdominal organs like gallstones, inguinal, umbilical & incisional hernia, acute conditions like appendicitis, major operations involving the stomach, spleen, small bowel, colon & rectum, adrenal glands, and others. Cancer surgery of the gastrointestinal tract from the oesophagus to the rectum is also done laparoscopically. The clinic has been offering Bariatric surgery to deal with obesity since 1999. The clinic is led by Dr. Ravintharan, who has over 28 years of experience starting as a general surgeon. Then in 1990, on a Singapore government scholarship, he travelled to Scotland where he worked with some of the finest surgical specialists, to train in the new and fast developing field of minimal access surgery, specialising in advanced laparoscopic surgery. He was one of the first Asian surgeons to receive such training and returned to Singapore to further advance laparoscopic surgery. He has travelled and trained surgeons in the Asian region and Singapore since 1992. Together with his team, he provides a well-planned and individualised surgical programme with the aim of solving medical and surgical conditions leading to a safe and comfortable outcome for each patient and to enhance and prolong the quality of life for those with cancers.
