Dr. Saw Huat Seong’s medical career started following his graduation from the University of Malaya where he obtained his MBBS degree. He completed his post-graduate studies in Australia, London, and New York. He then served as resident surgical officer at Brompton Hospital and The Hospital for Sick Children in London. He was also a Clinical Fellow in cardiovascular surgery and teaching assistant at New York University Medical Centre (United States).
Upon his return to Malaysia, he served as professor and the head of University of Malaya’s department of surgery. He then moved to Singapore where he was appointed adjunct professor and the first head of cardiothoracic surgery at the National University of Singapore. Highly respected in his field, Dr. Saw had sat on several hospital medical advisory committees and chaired the Gleneagles Hospital Medical Advisory Board and the Specialty Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery of Singapore Academy of Medicine. He is instrumental in getting Mount Elizabeth Hospital to set up its tissue committee. His effort has resulted in the Ministry of Health requiring all hospitals in Singapore to have their own tissue committee.
