Dr. Ooi’s medical career began after he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) degree from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore in 1999. In 2004, he went on and obtained his postgraduate degree in internal medicine as well as his membership from the Royal College of Physicians in the United Kingdom.
From 2005 to 2008, he completed the Cardiology Advanced Specialty Training at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and was inducted as a fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS) in 2009. One of his most important accomplishments during this period was running Singapore’s largest heart failure program, which mostly focused on patients with complex end-stage heart failure that required heart transplantation or electrical/mechanical assist device therapy.
In 2010, Dr. Ooi furthered his training in the subspecialty field of interventional cardiology. He was awarded a Human Manpower Development Program (HMDP) scholarship by the Department of Health, paving the way for him to complete his training at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. During this period, he gained extensive experience in adjunctive interventional techniques such as rotational atherectomy and coronary imaging, which include Intra-Vascular UltraSound (IVUS) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).
After his training in Canada, Dr. Ooi returned to Singapore in 2011 where he began working as a senior interventional cardiologist at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Since then, he has toured several countries conducting interventional stenting workshops and giving lectures about other advanced interventional techniques.
