Dr. James Tan Khiaw Ngiap is a urologist specialising in genito-urinary cancer surgery, robotic surgery, and laparoscopic urology. He is experienced in the surgical management of patients with benign or malignant tumours in the prostate, bladder, kidney, and adrenal glands. He also has a keen interest in the management of urinary stones and prostate diseases using minimally invasive and endoscopic methods.

Prior to going into private practice at Mount Elizabeth and Gleneagles Hospitals, he was Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s head of urology department at lead urology surgeon for its advanced laparoscopic surgery centre.

Dr. Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with an MBBS in 1990 and Master of Medicine in Surgery in 1995. He completed his specialist training in genito-urinary cancer surgery at the London Health Sciences Centre in Canada and training in laparoscopic urology at Chi Mei Foundation Medical Centre in Taiwan. In 2002, he became the first in Singapore to perform laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. He also pioneered several laparoscopic and robot-assisted urological procedures, including laparoscopic transposition of retrocaval ureter, laparoscopic repair of vesicovaginal fistula, laparoscopic retroperitoneal radical nephrectomy, and robotic ureteric reimplantation.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow (1995) and Academy of Medicine of Singapore (2000). He is also a member of the Singapore Urological Association, Asian Society of Endourology, and Asia-Pacific Society of Uro-Oncology and Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia.
