After losing his wife to cancer, Sri NT Rama Rao, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, established Nandamuri Basavataraka Rama Rao Memorial Cancer Foundation (NBTRCF). The foundation then partnered with several philanthropists, scientists, and physicians under the aegis of Indo American Cancer Organization to establish Basavatarakam Indo - American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute. This non-profit hospital was inaugurated in 2000 and quickly became the best cancer hospital in India.
BIACH&RI offers comprehensive cancer care that includes screening and prevention, early detection, diagnosis, staging, local and systemic treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care. Services offered include surgical and medical oncology, bone marrow transplant, anaesthesiology, laboratory medicine, radiology and imaging, nuclear medicine, and allied clinical services, which include cardiology, gastroenterology, orthopaedics, ENT, and pulmonology, among others.
The hospital features advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment including PET-CT with cyclotron, gallium scan, and gamma camera scan, nine fully equipped operation theatres, four intensive care units, six linear accelerators, brachytherapy unit, and world-class radiation therapy facility where the following procedures are carried out: image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiation therapy, and intraoperative radiotherapy. Fully equipped and staffed by multi-disciplinary team of medical professionals, the hospital has a zero need to refer to other medical facilities on matters related to cancer.
BIACH&RI is accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) and the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). It is also the recipient of the following awards: CNBC TV-18 & ICICI Lombard India Healthcare Award (2014-2015) and Healthcare Excellence Award 2015 by Indo Global Healthcare Summit and Expo.
