A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins in the scrotum. In some cases, it can cause infertility and mild to moderate discomfort. When symptoms such as these appear, the varicocele is treated through surgery.
There are several varicocele surgical methods available in Singapore and a urologist will decide on the best one for your condition. These methods are:
Laparoscopic Varicocelectomy – This method is commonly preferred by urologists in Singapore. The procedure involves making small incisions in the abdomen to identify the abnormal vein so that it can be ligated with special clips. The surgery will take around 45 minutes. You can be discharged after spending a few hours recovering from the surgery. You’ll be able to return to work or your normal daily activities after 2-3 days of rest.
Microsurgery – The process is similar to a Lapararoscopic Varicocelectomy, however only a small incision is made over the groin. An operative microscope is used to identify and ligate the abnormal vein. This procedure is performed as a day surgery, meaning you’ll be able to leave the hospital after a few hours and return to work after 2-3 days.
Emobilization – This surgical method is mostly used when a varicocele reappears after a previous surgery. It includes making a small puncture at the groin to insert a fine catheter. Dye is then introduced in the blood stream to identify the location of the problem precisely. Blood flow to the area is then blocked using coils or balloons. It will take a couple of hours to complete the surgery.
